VIRGIN GORDA—League champs Rangers got two goals within a two minute span in the first 11 minutes of play, then used their defense to shut down the United Kickers for a 2-0 Sunday night victory, to seal the Virgin Gorda Football Association Earl Wilson knockout crown. “Our strategy was to score early, then take control of the game,” explained Rangers player-manager Caswal Pondt. “As long as we scored early and controlled the game, I thought they had no chance of coming back and winning the game.”

The Rangers, who won their ninth title in 10 years earlier this month, successfully defended the knockout title they won last year at the Valley Recreation Grounds, after Rohan “Chi Chi” Lennon surprised the United Kickers’ defense in the ninth minute of play. Two minutes later, Avondale “Avon” Williams produced the final score in the game. Both teams had their chances at goal however, but neither was able to have their players finish. “We have guys especially for different areas,” Pondt noted. “Avon is one of the guys who distribute the ball and Chi Chi is the guy who scores most of our goals. But, sometimes, Michael (Haynes) and Chesley (Miller) pitch in. They all do a very good job in backing up Chi Chi.” United Kickers manager Anthony “Zanku” Walters did not offer any comments on his teams’ performance. Pondt said the victory showed his squad is a disciplined team. He said they are very focused on what they want to do, adding that the victory was very special for his squad after losing the league title last year for the first time in nine years but won the knockout crown. “We wanted to prove to the community and the Football Association that we are the best team on Virgin Gorda,” he said. “This is a very good way to end the year. I’m proud on the guys on the Rangers team. We really trained hard this year, because everybody had given up on us. Last year, we lost a few matches and everybody said that’s the end of Rangers. But, we put down our head, came back and showed them that we are the dominant team in this league.” League president Avanell “Clarky” Morton, declared the league as a success. He said they met 95 percent of the goals they had established. “One of my goals is getting young people involved in everything and I think with the help of the association and sponsors, we did that,” Morton said. “To see the Under 21 guys playing together for the first time in the BVI as a young team in the league, stool out as one of the major things in the Virgin Gorda league this year.”
