Richmond and Melissa Verdoliva—who were here two years ago—spent their weekend on Virgin Gorda, as guests of the BVI Football Association. Richmond said he was impressed with Saturday’s clinic. “The last time we were here, there were 15, 16 kids. This time, we had about 45. It was just amazing to see the number of kids that have shown up, and the improvement they have made. We had a lot of fun doing different things with them.” On Sunday, Richmond had a chance to see Daresha Martin during an intra squad game, and was surprised by her play after she scored both goals in a 2-0 win. “Her maturity from the last time I was here to this time was nice to see,” said Richmond who spoke with her following the game. “It was good to see all the things she’s doing in the community and, her eagerness to get an education and to continue playing soccer.” In a later game, Richmond observed Joel Fahie playing in an Under 20 match vs the Wolves. The Under 20 team played Wolves to a 1-1 tie, before losing in a penalty shootout. Fahie he said, was frustrated with the outcome. “I told him he showed me a lot,” Richmond said. “Again too, he’s a person with a lot of character. It’s not all about just what’s on the soccer field, but, it’s how they are as people too. His skills have improved a lot, his conditioning is very good, so we are going to try and work something out with him as well.” Richmond said he was also impressed with some other players. He said because his college is a Jr. College and doesn’t have the age restriction as some of the NCAA schools. He said he has to go back and research the rules. “There were some of the older gentlemen that haven’t gone to college that we can help out,” he said. “Their speed and agility is all there because of their mature aspect of the game. I spoke to them had them fill out some forms, and told them I’d get back to them.” Football Association head Llewellyn “Tudor” Dasent, said he though the visit helped a lot and it showed that his association is very much interested in the welfare of the youths. “If we can do anything in our power to get them off to college, to improve their academics and become professional soccer players later on in life, I think we would have done our job,” he said.
