Department of Youth Affairs and Sports Primary School Football League drew to an end last Wednesday, with the finals and closing ceremony held at Cedar School.  It was to be a battle of the two islands – Cedar School and Althea Scatliffe representing Tortola, and St.Marys’ School and CornerStone School from Virgin Gorda. The home schools were well represented in every age group, and having already secured the Under 7 age group category two weeks previously against Sea Cow’s Bay Saints, confidence was high in the Cedar camp.   They soon made their home advantage count, when in the first match up of the day between Cedar School and St.Mary’s, a strong Cedar side swept to a 2-0 victory.  St. Mary’s had no answer to a commanding performance from the Tortola side. The next game in the feast of football was the third/fourth place play-off between Althea Scatliffe School and St. Mary’s.  A determined display ensured a St.Mary’s victory, running out 2-1 winners in a close fought affair, with Felix Garcia grabbing a gem of a goal, although proving to be a consolation goal for Althea Scatliffe.
In the final of the Under 12’s drew CornerStone School and Cedar School together.  The battling titans could not be separated in regulation time, finishing the match at 1-1 with two classic final goals coming from Thomas Bridgewater of Cedar School and Jumaane Morton of CornerStone School.  This lead to the drama of a penalty shoot-out, dreaded by the English players in the Cedar School team.  However, the pressure of spot-kicks was brushed aside by the Cedar team, calmly converting all of their spot-kicks, whilst Cornerstone had two saved – leaving Cedar to raise the Championship trophy as victors of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports Primary School League.   Special gratitude is extended to the Parents that supported their children throughout, the Teachers for helping the league be a success, the Schools involved in making the league a competitive competition, the coaches for their hard work, and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports for their financial backing of the league.
