President Grant with Principal Janice Lettsome. Susan Frett-Potter looks on.
The British Virgin Islands Football Association implemented a reading program "Reading For Academic Success" at the Francis Lettsome Primary School on Wednesday 23 March 2005.   The reading program is an initiative of the BVI Football Association to encourage children to read.   The Football Association President Mr. Kenrick Grant in presenting the first set of books to the Principal Ms Janice Lettsome, spoke to the pupils of the importance of reading.      In comparing football to reading, the president asked the children to practice their reading like they would practice football.  Regular practice will help to develop your skills and make a successful performance when it matters most.  Mrs. Susan Frett-Potter of the Ministry of Education spoke to the staff and pupils on the importance of the children actively participating the the reading exercises.  She went on the thank the BVI Football Association for their interest and support for the children.     The President stated, "The BVI Football Association is concern with the academic development of the child, and studies have shown that children that read more do better academically than those that don't.   So if we can turn children on to reading now, it could have a significant impact on their academic careers later.    We want to keep the program within the classroom environment, under the supervision of the teachers.  There is time that is already allotted to quiet reading, we hope the children would be able to make good use of the books then.  Francis Lettsome primary school was selected for this pilot program and it is hoped that we can move to the other schools in the near future." The President concluded.  Mrs Susan Frett-Potter of the ministry of Education will be monitoring the program.     The BVI Football Association is a non profit sporting organization, responsible for the administration and development of football in the British Virgin Islands.
